Feminism in Andhra

Chalam, though a male was the first feminist writer in Telugu. He wrote many novels about women’s freedom, eighty years ago. Gurajada Apparao, father of modern Telugu literature wrote about plight of women in many poems and essays, a hundred years ago. Later on, Ms Ranganayakamma pioneered feminist writings followed by many authors. Ms Durgabai Deshmukh, Congress leader and reformer did a lot for the upliftment of women. Now women in Andhra are free and distinguish themselves in many fields. Rani Rudramma of the Kakatiya empire was the first known female ruler of an Indian empire.
